For nearly four decades, Michael Gordon has disrupted, innovated, and revolutionized the way we think about hair. Most recognize Gordon as the founder of Bumble and bumble, which began as a single salon in 1977 and grew into an empire with a beloved, cult-classic product lineup. After the acquisition of Bumble and bumble by Estée Lauder in 2006, Gordon departed. With the freedom to pursue more creative personal ventures, in 2010 Gordon produced Vidal Sassoon: The Movie, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival to critical acclaim, as well as an accompanying book entitled Vidal Sassoon: How One Man Changed the World with a Pair of Scissors.
While his artistic endeavors proved highly successful, Gordon found there was still more work to be done in the world of haircare. Fed up with the overwhelming amount of hair products composed of harmful, cheap ingredients, Gordon founded Purely Perfect, a detergent-free reinvention of traditional products that quickly became a favorite among editors, stylists, and consumers alike. The line acted as a launchpad for an even bigger mission, and in 2014, Gordon launched Hair Story. A complete reimagining of the traditional hair product and hair salon, Hair Story pioneered a more sustainable, individualized approach to how hair products are bought, sold, and used. Since leaving the brand, Gordon has further pursued passion projects such as Isle of Roses Rose Hair Oil, a product inspired by his daughters.
Some of Gordon’s most important work falls outside the realm of his brands and occurs largely behind the scenes. As a passionate mentor for both colleagues and industry professionals, Gordon has developed an astute sense for potential, and his propensity for mentorship and talent cultivation has enabled him to consistently build teams of passionate, hardworking people. For Gordon, being a mentor is an ongoing cycle of pinpointing talent and continually working to ensure that talent is properly utilized and appreciated. As an adviser to hairdressers, salons, and business owners, he has helped countless industry professionals identify opportunities for innovation and growth, and offers his own creative insights to help take artistic ideas and brand concepts from the drawing board to reality.
Gordon’s ability to create and weave compelling narratives into the framework of brand identity has greatly contributed to his decades of success. It is also what makes him such a dynamic public speaker. Just as sharp as his business acumen, his affinity for storytelling transforms speaking engagements into something more like a conversation; simultaneously educational, inspirational, and humorous. Most often covering the topics of leadership and transformation, Gordon has proven himself to be an invaluable source of wisdom and inspiration for those who have had the opportunity to listen.
